Joe Besser was an American actor, comedian, and voice actor who was one of the members of the legendary comedy trio, The Three Stooges. Besser replaced Shemp Howard as the third of the Three Stooges when Shemp died in 1955. He played the role of the curious, naive, and childlike member of the Stooges, often referred to as "The Little Guy." Besser was a gifted comedy writer and had a successful career in radio and television as well.
Besser was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and began his career in vaudeville before transitioning to comedy writing and acting. He worked with comedian Abbott and Costello in the 1940s and was a regular performer on The Spike Jones Show. In the 1950s, he joined The Three Stooges and appeared in 16 of their films, including "The Three Stooges Meet Hercules" and "The Three Stooges Go Around the World in a Daze."
After leaving The Three Stooges, Besser continued to work in television, appearing on shows such as The Joey Bishop Show, The Andy Griffith Show, and The Dick Van Dyke Show. He also provided the voice of several classic cartoon characters, including the iconic Hanna-Barbera character, Babu the Genie, on the popular cartoon series, "Jeannie."
Besser died on March 1, 1988, at the age of 80 in North Hollywood, California. His work with The Three Stooges, along with his wry wit and unique comedic style, has earned him a place in the pantheon of great American comedians.
